Being Part of Everything-Oriental Garden (5/11-5/29)

Theme: Understand the oriental Garden
You are expected to watch this film to understand the overview of the lesson.
                                         
The project consists of 3 assignments. One assignment for each week. 
Please watch these two films and answer the following questions: 
  • What are the five elements in a Chinese Garden?
  • What do these two environments suggest about the relationship between the human and natural worlds in the gardens?
  • What strategies has the designer used to create a transition from one space flow into the other spaces? 
  • Observe visitors engaging in this space. What do you notice about the way they move (e.g., their path, speed, and demeanor)? How does this compare to your experience moving through a grocery store or train station?
  • Screenshot a scenery from the films, and describe the interesting points you observed in the picture.

Part 1 Google Classroom Assignment:

Watch these two films and please write a paragraph to answer the following questions in a Google Doc.  Make sure you provide full sentences to each question.
  • What are the five elements in a Chinese Garden?
  • What do these two environments suggest about the relationship between the human and natural worlds in the gardens?
  • What strategies has the designer used to create a transition from one space flow into the other spaces?

Part 2 Google classroom Assignment 
The final artwork would be to draw or paint an oriental landscape picture with full scenery. In oriental landscape painting is called 山水画。It means a scenery consists of mountains and water.  The part 2 assignment is to search for reference and sketch a draft. The draft should include mountains, water, trees, and oriental architectural details to represent the oriental culture landscape. 
Use paper size roughly 8.5 x11( letter size). A thicker paper is better for this project. 
You can search your oriental reference or use the following oriental elements to sketch the draft:

You must choose 3 elements from the following elements of water, mountains, trees, and oriental architecture details.
Water Fall or Water.
Oriental Trees
Mountains
Oriental architectural details


Design a thoughtful composition
The composition must have a foreground, middle ground and background

Part 3 Google classroom Assignment 
Submit a final slide includes the picture and a poem
The theme of the poem: Being Part of Everything
Add colors to the sketch. You can use watercolor, color pencils, to do the light shedding on your sketch.  You can also paint your final artwork to complete the picture. 
The final slide example:
Artwork should follow the rubric to complete the assignment. The artwork is not following the rubric will be returned back to you to make adjustments to receive credit.
Art Rubric:
1. A full-size of 8x11 picture to represent the oriental landscape picture
2. Well planned layout to show foreground, middle ground, and background composition.
2. Enough details to represent your big idea.
3. Color the entire picture includes the background

4. With a craftsmanship
Craftsmanship is the quality that comes from creating with passion, care, and attention to detail. 
Good craftsmanship is to enhance the art quality through the Elements of Art and Principles of design.
